Individual-based model of population dynamics

Model : indivpop1
Simile version : 3.1+
Date added : 2003-06-20
Keywords : Population dynamics ; Individual-based ; Individual-based population dynamics ;

Description

This is a single-species model of population dynamics, in which each individual is represented separately, coming into existence then dying during the course of the simulation. It has been designed to correspond directly to the more conventional 'lumped' model of population dynamics, in which the population size is represented by a single state variable.

The model makes use of a Simile 'population submodel'. This contains symbols representing the initial number of individuals in the population, the reproduction rate per individual, and the death per individual. The total population size is stored in a variable outside the population submodel: this is obtained by simply counting up the number of individuals.

The model includes both density-dependence and the age of each individual. The probability of an individual giving birth to offspring, and the probability of it dying, are both related to population size.
